Devika Uses Virtual Reality to Deliver Experiential Learning

When Devika was founded, our mission was to create a modern business that utilized emerging technology and gave back to the community. To achieve this goal, we focused on education. One area of particular interest included adopting virtual reality (VR) to enhance experiential learning in schools.

Our vision was to not only offer knowledge but provide students and schools with immersive learning experiences. This inspired our team to create Devika Kolb.

Kolb is a Devika-built software application that facilitates experiential learning and is underpinned by the experiential learning theory (ELT) (Kolb 1984). The Devika Kolb content is mapped to the Department of Education High School curriculum and is delivered to students in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Kolb also utilizes gamification, which is the application of game-like thinking (eg. leveling up) to help students engage with classroom content.

A Brief History of Virtual Reality

While VR has existed on the periphery since the 1950s, hardware and software limitations have prevented its widescale development and adoption. As VR has become more accessible, it has primarily been connected to the gaming industry. However, VR has many possible applications in industries such as healthcare, data visualization, public safety, entertainment, sport, design, and our area of focus, education.
