Devika Hosts Year 12 Computer Science Work Experience Students

Introduction

Each year, Devika hosts a number of work experience students who are exploring careers in IT. Last week, we hosted Jaxon and Benjamin, two year 12 students for a computer science placement.

This work experience placement forms part of Jaxson ad Benjamin’s Cert 3 in Information Digital Media Technology (IDM) that they are completing as a subject at school.

Jaxson and Benjamin have previously completed work experience at a consumer electronics and cloud infrastructure company respectively, but neither have any experience with coding or software development.

Overview of Placement

Both students participated in a computer science placement. On day 1, the students are paired with a Devika software developer to learn the fundamentals of HTML coding.

From day 2 onwards, they are tasked with the project of creating their own website from scratch to display their resume.

Towards the end of the week, once this task is completed, the students move into developing simple games or preparing for a presentation on their learnings to the wider company.

Technical Skills learnt during placement

Learning HTML, CSS and Javascript

Beyond training from the Devika software developers, the students were also encouraged to manage self-directed learning through W3 schools, chatGPT and Youtube.

Presentation

At the end of the week, Benjamin and Jaxson presented their work and answered any questions the team had.

What was your main lesson from this work experience?

Jaxson: I thought learning to code was going to be really hard, but once you understand the concepts it’s fairly straightforward to pick up.

Benjamin: I didn’t realize how much goes on behind the scenes with building technology. As an end user you only get exposed to the end product, but not everything that runs in the background. It’s amazing that this is what is powering the world’s technology behind the scenes.

What was your favourite part about working at Devika?
